The Flat Track Canada Series returned to Welland County Speedway for round five and the #73 machine of Doug Lawrence proved once again that he has the quarter mile oval dialed. After riding from the back to a fine third place finish in the previous round, Lawrence made it look somewhat easy on this night taking both the Open Expert and Production Frame wins over current number one plate holder Don Taylor. Lawrence did have to work a bit in the Open final after being pushed to the high side of the track early in the final. After making his way to the front within a couple of laps however, Lawrence seemed to put it on cruise control as he led the pack to the checkers. New York based rider Scott Hartrich had a fine evening as well as he grabbed victory in the Intermediate Production Frame class and finished runner up to Josh Dolan in the Open Intermediate race. Dolan seemed to be the only one that had the track figured out for the Open final. As Dolan cruised along at a smooth and steady pace, the rest of the riders dropped far behind him as they spun their rear tires trying to catch him. A great move by Dustin Lambert on the last lap gave him a third place finish on the night. As a pack of riders entered turn four three wide, Lambert dove to the inside in a brave move and made it stick at the line.
Novice action saw the same three riders share the same step on the podium in both races. Tyler Brown finished on top of the box both times while local rider Jesse Isherwood put up a valiant fight only to come up a little bit short. Outlaw Productions C.E.O. Kyle Sheppard grabbed a third place finish in both classes in only his second race at the speedway.
The Vet riders not only put on a great show on this night but also capped it off with a classy move. With young gun Hunter Bauer headed to the A.M.A. Nationals the following week, Steve Ball came up with the idea of donating their prize money to help fund the trip. After grabbing the checkers, Sam Manyon made a stop at the pits and grabbed Bauer for his victory lap. When they got to the start/finish line Katalin Hesmer handed Bauer the envelopes containing all the prize money for the class. Hats off to Ball, Manyon, Rick Gunby, Rob Churchill, Brad Kitto, Rob Vrbanac, Sean Gillespie and Martine Kehoe for your act of goodwill that helped Bauer chasehis dream. You guys rock ! 50cc action saw Maguire Scott grab the victory in front of hometown fans in the shaft class while young Shawn Van Soclen finished second in only his second race of his career. Chain action saw Mitchell Tinney grab the win over points leader Branden Keys which allowed him to close within two points of the class lead.
